On the 20th of June 2023, the Norwegian government established a Committee to investigate International Adoptions. The investigation was initiated following investigations into international adoption in other countries, information revealed by adult adoptees’ searches for origins, and reports in the media about irregularities in international adoptions to Norway. The Committee began its work in the fall of 2023.
The Committee will investigate whether Norwegian authorities have had sufficient control over international adoptions and whether there has been illegal or unethical practices in international adoptions to Norway. The full mandate (in English) can be found here.
The committee will examine adoptions at a systemic level. For this purpose, we will look into a selection of individual cases, but will not be able to provide answers in the concrete cases. Any individual cases mentioned in the committee’s report will be anonymized..
The committee’s deadline is up to two years from its commencement, and it will deliver one or more interim reports.
